The Cleveland Guardians exceeded expectations by quite a bit this season. They were just a few plays going their way away from a World Series berth.
Now, they’re heading into the offseason where they will try to improve their roster to win the AL Central again in 2025. But their offseason is already off to a terrible start. According to a statement from the Guardians, 2024 All-Star designated hitter David Fry has undergone elbow surgery to repair a damaged UCL in his right elbow.
The estimated recovery time is 6-8 months before he can return to a DH role, with the timeline increasing up to 12 months before he can play the field again. “Due to right elbow discomfort during the latter part of the 2024 season, David Fry was evaluated by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas, TX on Tuesday, Oct. 29,” The Guardians announced in a statement. “After conferring with Cleveland Guardians’ physicians, and a clinical evaluation, Dr. Meister confirmed the presence of a chronically insufficient ulnar collateral ligament with a resolving flexor strain of Fry’s right elbow.
Dr. Meister recommended Fry undergo a surgical procedure and subsequently utilized a hybrid/internal brace and tendon graft reconstruction technique to address the insufficient ligament on Wednesday, Oct. 30 in Dallas, TX.” “Rehabilitation/recovery is expected to be in the 6-8 month range from a return to hit/DH standpoint and 12 months for a return to game activity from a position player standpoint.” Fry, 28, earned his first All-Star nod this season, slashing .263/.356/.448 with 14 home runs and 18 doubles.
The projected return timeline should have him back in the Guardians lineup by June or July.
