Andy Walker Names All-Time Favourite Celtic Player as ‘Elegance’ Sets Him Apart from the Rest
Former Celtic striker and pundit Andy Walker has revealed his all-time favourite player to wear the famous green and white hoops, citing “elegance” as the defining quality that sets his choice apart from the rest. Speaking during a recent interview, Walker highlighted the impact and grace of the legendary midfielder Paul McStay, a figure widely revered by the Celtic faithful.
McStay, often referred to as “The Maestro,” is considered one of the greatest players in Celtic’s history. Having spent his entire career with the club, the midfielder made over 600 appearances between 1982 and 1997, showcasing extraordinary vision, technical ability, and an unmatched passion for the game. Walker, who played alongside McStay during the late 1980s and early 1990s, spoke warmly of his former teammate’s contributions on and off the pitch.
“Paul had this effortless quality about him,” Walker explained. “Every touch, every pass—there was an elegance to his game that few players could replicate. He made the difficult look easy and was a true leader in the dressing room and on the pitch.”
Walker also emphasized McStay’s loyalty to Celtic, which endeared him to fans even more. Despite interest from numerous top European clubs, McStay remained committed to his boyhood team, captaining the side during some of its most challenging periods.
“Paul’s decision to stay with Celtic when he could have gone elsewhere says everything about his character,” Walker added. “He wasn’t just a great footballer; he was a great man.”
McStay’s legacy remains deeply embedded in Celtic’s history, and Walker’s glowing tribute is a testament to the enduring impact of “The Maestro” on those who played with and admired him.
