DeBrusk, who was playing in Boston as a visitor for the first time since signing with Vancouver in the offseason, scored in the second period. That and an empty-net goal in the third were the only goals in the game, though the Bruins had their chances with 32 shots on goal coupled with a strong defensive effort for 60 minutes.

“I thought they played the better game,” DeBrusk said after the game. “They were shooting pucks from everywhere. I’ve watched and kept up to date a bit and talked to some guys. We held on. We got the two (points) and got the job done. Sometimes that’s what good teams do is find a ways to win, and our goalie stood on his head.”

DeBrusk spent the first seven seasons with the Bruins after they drafted the forward in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He signed a seven-year deal with Vancouver and entered TD Garden on Tuesday as a visitor for the first time.

“Once you get out there on that ice, it was pretty intense,” he said. “Not gonna lie.”

He was greeted by cheers and even exchanged a puck for Oreos during warmups. A video tribute was shown on the jumbotron in the first period and DeBrusk saluted the crowd who were on their feet. Boos rang down after he scored and he quietly celebrated the goal — a stark difference than when he’d skate down to one knee whenever he scored while he was a member of the Bruins.

“It was more than what it looks like,” DeBrusk said. “But I think it would be worse if I did the one knee down.”

The Bruins challenged DeBrusk’s goals for a hand-pass but were unsuccessful. The forward admitted he wasn’t sure if it would stand because he had a similar goal called back during the playoffs.

“I didn’t know if it was actually gonna be disallowed,” DeBrusk said. “I thought it was high. But I mean, I wasn’t gonna not put it in. It was just a lucky bounce. In years past here I got those disallowed. So it’s funny how things work out.”
