After Lee Johnson’s dismissal in January 2022, former Chelsea and England captain John Terry indicated he was a top contender for the Sunderland position.
The five-time Premier League and FA Cup winner retired from the sport in 2018. Since then, he has served as Dean Smith’s assistant manager at Aston Villa and Leicester, but he has yet to make his senior managerial debut.
Speaking on the Up Front with Simon Jordan podcast, he reminisced on what he viewed as a fantastic interview. He stated, “I had a pretty fantastic interview with Sunderland. They’d just fired Lee Johnson. They were ranked third in League One. I’d spent two weeks watching games, studying the squad and its players, and I knew everyone.
“I had a great encounter and came away believing that was mine. I got along really well with the sporting director (Kristjaan Speakman). I received the message ‘everything went extremely well, just a little bit inexperienced.’ It was the same with the second one; just no experience.
“To be honest, I didn’t want to fall as low as League One, but I promise you Sunderland was improving that year. That’s the one I regret not getting, since it would have given me a promotion right immediately, and I’d be on my way after that.”
Terry is eager to get into management and has already stated that he discussed the Newcastle position prior to Eddie Howe’s appointment. However, he claims that he is now receiving only a few phone calls from owners.
He went on to say, “I’m no longer getting phone calls to go interview with teams or owners. Am I looking? I am not putting myself out there completely. I’m a little like, if someone wants me, I believe they should approach me a little.”
