Nashville United and Atlanta United draw bring mockery and praise to Slisz…

Nashville United and Atlanta United draw thanks to Slisz’s first career goal.

Ten minutes into the second half, Bartosz Slisz netted his first goal of the season to assist Atlanta United, who were playing without a full complement, draw 1-1 with Nashville SC on Saturday.

Under interim manager Rumba Munthali, Nashville (3-4–7) won the draw in its first game since entering the league in 2020 without manager Gary Smith leading the team. Following Smith’s dismissal on Thursday, Munthali, a player development coach and former member of the Nashville team, assumed temporary leadership.

Without Thiago Almada and Giorgos Giakoumakis, Atlanta United (3-6-5) has lost its previous eight games. Atlanta’s 1-2 loss to FC Cincinnati last week resulted in the injury of its dynamic pair.

After 40 minutes, Hany Mukhtar’s penalty kick goal gave Nashville a 1-0 lead at the break. Following a foul on Mukhtar in the penalty area, Atlanta United goalie Brad Gusan was given a yellow card, setting up Mukhtar for his third goal of the year.

In the 55th minute, rookie midfielder Slisz equalized Atlanta United with a right-footed drive from outside the box that found the lower right corner of the net after receiving a ball from Tristan Muyumba. For Muyumba, who made his league debut last season with ten appearances, a goal and an assist, it was his first assist of the year.

For Nashville, Joe Willis was unable to make a save in goal. Atlanta United had four shots that Guzan stopped, three of which came in the second half.

In the all-time series, Nashville is ahead 4-3-4. Late in the previous season, Atlanta United handed Nashville their worst loss, 4-0. The previous time Atlanta United visited Nashville, in April of the previous season, Nashville won 3-1.

On Saturday, Atlanta United will play Los Angeles FC at home. On Saturday, Nashville will travel to play CF Montreal.
