Rob Staton discusses Danny Rohl’s future and the current ‘pressure’ on Sheffield Wednesday.
However, for the Owls, this summer may be more critical than for other teams, as they have numerous unresolved issues.
The club recently released their retained list and is awaiting decisions from key players like Di’Shon Bernard, Josh Windass, and Barry Bannan.
Additionally, the Owls are trying to secure Danny Rohl’s future. Rohl and Chairman Chansiri have been in discussions, with more talks scheduled after Rohl’s recent return to the UK.
There’s certainly a lot of worry among fans over whether or not Rohl stays. And there’s certainly a lot of pressure on Chansiri to tempt Rohl into committing his long-term future to the club.
“The chairman is under pressure because he has faced a lot of justified criticism in recent years.
“If he can secure Wednesday’s future with this manager, he will regain a lot of goodwill from the fans.
“However, if he fails and the club experiences another summer like the last one, the criticism will only intensify.”
Sheffield Wednesday facing make or break summer
The upcoming summer for Sheffield Wednesday could either be highly successful or turn into another catastrophe.
Last summer was a disaster, with Darren Moore leaving shortly after securing promotion from League One. Xisco Munoz then stepped in, leading to a chaotic and poorly managed transfer window.
If Danny Rohl leaves this summer, the Owls will find themselves in a similar predicament as when Moore departed, setting them up for another problematic season in the Championship.
However, if Rohl remains, key players like Windass and Bannan, and potentially even Bernard, are likely to stay. Rohl’s presence would also make the club more appealing to prospective transfers.
Thus, Rohl staying would lead to the acquisition of better players this summer, including younger talents around whom the club could build, moving away from the strategy of signing whoever is available.
For Chairman Chansiri, there is significant pressure to ensure Rohl stays and to support his plans for the summer. As Staton mentions, failing to do so would make Chansiri more unpopular than ever.
