‘TERRIFIED’: Nuno review why he signed Giovanni Reyna for a huge amount for Forest

This is Why Nottingham Forest Signed Giovanni Reyna! Our Exciting New Attacker! | Full Scout Report

When Forest secured Reyna on loan from Dortmund for the latter half of the 2023/24 season, it was a noteworthy acquisition.

Initially, Forest had Andrey Santos on loan from Chelsea for the first part of the season, but his playing time in the Premier League amounted to a mere seven minutes, proving to be an unsuccessful stint. Consequently, Forest opted to return Santos to Chelsea and replaced him with Reyna, although this move also yielded limited success.

Now, there are claims circulating regarding the rationale behind the Reds’ decision to take a gamble on the American talent.

The real reason why Nottingham Forest signed Giovanni Reyna

It seems that the 21-year-old was destined to join the City Ground primarily as a backup player.

Daniel Taylor, a Forest-supporting journalist known for his insightful coverage, provided clarity on why Forest opted to bring Reyna on board.

In a recent Q&A session on The Athletic’s website, Taylor revealed that Reyna’s signing was prompted by Nuno’s fear of potential injuries to MGW, and also to bolster the team’s wide options.

During his tenure at the club, Reyna only managed to start two games, featuring in a total of nine matches without making a significant impact in terms of goal contributions.

Reyna was the right player at the wrong time

Nuno Espirito Santo naturally expressed concern over the potential loss of Gibbs-White due to injury.

Yet, it’s regrettable for Reyna that despite arriving at Forest with high aspirations, he didn’t secure consistent playing time in the squad.

Reyna seemingly arrived at Forest at an inconvenient juncture for his talents to fully blossom.

His prospects at Dortmund appear limited, and ideally, Forest would have provided him with an opportunity to showcase his abilities before considering a permanent deal.

Ultimately, Reyna’s time on the pitch at Forest was too sparse to accurately assess his Premier League potential.

Under different circumstances, Reyna’s profile might have aligned perfectly with Forest’s needs, but in the 2023/24 season, he was primarily seen as a backup choice.
