Gotta see it: Red Wings Top Pick Nets Spectacular Goal
The right-winger’s potent shot was the buzz of the town when the Detroit Red Wings selected Norwegian forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygard 15th overall in the 2024 NHL entry draft.
Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman stated of the pick, “He can really shoot the puck.”
During the Swedish Hockey League preseason, Brandsegg-Nygard quickly began to demonstrate this talent. In a 6-5 away overtime victory at Bjorkloven, Brandsegg-Nygard would score to tie the score at four. It was his debut for Skelleftea.
As he entered the offensive zone, Brandsegg-Nygard set up at the top of the faceoff circles. Off a cross-ice feed, he would unleash a monster one-timer that ended up bulging the twine top shelf over the glove hand of the goaltender.
Writer Samuel Soderlund described the goal as “a magnificent shot signed by Brandsegg-Nygard, straight into the roof of the net” on the Skeleton website.
The Norwegian winger came close to making it two goals late in regulation time. From the slot, he would snap a fast shot that would go just wide of the net.
Brandsegg-Nygard concurred with Yzerman’s evaluation of the strongest suit Yzerman had to offer from his skill set.
“It’s probably mine,” Brandsegg-Nygard remarked. “I think I have a really good shot,”
While representing Norway in the IIHF World Championship this past spring, NHL veteran Mats Zuccarello, who was tasked with playing on Brandsegg-Nygard’s line, also saw the teenager’s special skill right away.
“He told me to simply not take as many shots as possible,” Brandsegg-Nygard stated. “He’s going to give me the puck so I can shoot.” That was all he had to say.
Red Wings Pick Sandin Pellikka Staying Home
It has already been revealed that Brandsegg-Nygard will be at Red Wings camp the following month. Nevertheless, a Swedish rumour that said his Skelleftea teammate, defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka, would be joining him in camp has been refuted.
That debunking was given straight from the source. Wings camp will not be attended by Sandin Pellikka, who says he will remain in Sweden. In the 2023 NHL entry draft, Detroit selected the Swedish rearguard with the 17th overall pick.
