Mitchell has provided the latest update on Will Day’s injury and offered selection updates on the defensive duo.

AFL Rd 2 - Hawthorn v Richmond

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has stated that there are “no guarantees” Will Day will return for the start of September action, assuming the Hawks qualify with a win this weekend. Day sustained a shoulder injury in Round 23 when teammate Jai Newcombe accidentally collided with him during a match against Richmond.

Mitchell confirmed that Day will not play this week and his availability for future games remains uncertain. Although Day does not require surgery, his return depends on how quickly he recovers from the pain and soreness. Currently, he is able to move the shoulder, but it remains tender and painful. Day will be working hard to return as soon as possible.

Two key players face uncertainty for Hawthorn’s upcoming matches, including their potential finals run. Changkuoth Jiath will miss the game against North Melbourne due to a persistent calf issue, while Jack Scrimshaw is dealing with a dislocated finger and will test various on-field remedies during training.

Mitchell confirmed that Jiath will not play this weekend, as he is only running at about 75% capacity, making it too risky to include him. Scrimshaw’s availability is still up in the air; he underwent a clean-out procedure and has a significant cut. He will test his hand with bandages and possibly a glove to assess its functionality before the match.

Despite these setbacks, Mitchell will rely heavily on his young players, including Calsher Dear, who has impressed with his competitiveness and rapid growth. At just 19, Dear has exceeded expectations, demonstrating a strong work ethic and pressure game, even if his kicking needs improvement.

Regarding All-Australian selection, Mitchell believes that Massimo D’Ambrosio, who has shown significant progress this season, deserves consideration. However, he anticipates that Errol Gulden will secure one wing position, with the selectors possibly opting for a midfielder on the other wing, although D’Ambrosio’s performance could still make him a strong contender if two genuine wingmen are chosen.
