Derby County suffered defeat at the hands of League Two Barrow on Tuesday night.
After defeating Chesterfield in the first round of the Carabao Cup, Derby County went to Barrow for the second round.
However, a resolute Barrow team humiliated the Rams, winning the match on penalties in the end.
That night, Paul Warne’s team did not do well. Social media users for the Rams berated the team’s concerning lack of discipline and subpar passing versus teams in lower leagues.
However, Warne can now devote all of his attention to league responsibilities after losing in the cup, since there will be another difficult match this weekend in the Championship.
Ben Osborn and Eiran Cashin might miss more games when Derby County plays Bristol City, according to Warne.
Josh Vickers has also sustained an injury somewhere, adding his name to the list of injured players that includes Corey Blackett-Taylor and Jake Rooney.
Kenzo Goudmijn, a new summer addition and fan favourite, was substituted off the pitch at halftime in the match against Barrow.
Paul Warne discusses potential Kenzo Goudmijn injury at Derby County
Derby County signed Goudmijn from AZ Alkmaar this summer.
And the midfielder made an immediate impression, with Derby County fans wowed by Goudmijn during the opening day defeat vs Blackburn Rovers.
He’s so far started every game for Derby County this season. The 22-year-old is yet to finish a game though, coming off at half-time of the game vs Barrow.
Warne told the club: “Kenzo Goudmijn took a hit early on, so he had to come off.”
If Goudmijn isn’t able to feature this weekend then it’ll certainly give Warne a bit of selection headache, with the likes of Osborn potentially missing out too.
Expect David Ozoh to step into the XI, and a possible start for Wolves signing Tawanda Chirewa, with options all of a sudden looking quite light for Warne.
It also sheds light on a possible lack of depth and quality in the first-team squad at Pride Park, which will need to be addressed before the summer transfer window slams shut on August 30th.
Thankfully, Goudmijn’s injury doesn’t seem too serious, and the Dutchman will be hoping to return to the XI this weekend and continue his strong start to the season.
He gives Derby a real edge in midfield and if Warne can figure out how to best utilise his strengths in this Derby County side, then he’ll have a real game-changer on his hands.
