The connection between the two NBA teams and Michigan State runs deep. Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia, who played as a walk-on for the Spartans and was part of their 2000 NCAA Championship team, is thrilled about the game. Ishbia, who bought the Suns for $4 billion in December 2022, expressed his excitement in a press release, highlighting how his experience at Michigan State and mentorship from Coach Tom Izzo have shaped his career.
Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, a Michigan State alumnus with a degree in construction management, also has strong ties to the university. Gores purchased the Pistons in 2011 for $325 million and has continued to engage with MSU. He shared his enthusiasm for bringing NBA basketball to East Lansing and giving local fans a glimpse of the Pistons’ new season.
Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo also expressed his excitement about hosting the game, noting the significance of having two former Spartans as NBA team owners. Izzo, who coached Ishbia during his time at MSU, looks forward to showcasing NBA basketball to the MSU community and East Lansing.
Tickets for the game will be available starting Tuesday, September 10, at 10:00 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at or through the Spartan Ticket Office, with prices starting at $15.
