If Max Verstappen had to put together his own driver lineup for the Le Mans 24 Hours, he has revealed who he would pick to partner with him.
During an interview with Red Bull Esports driver Jarno Opmeer on his YouTube channel, the Dutchman was asked to choose four drivers to fictitiously form a team for the renowned event.
The 26-year-old focused right away on Nyck de Vries, a former Formula One driver who participated in 11 Grands Prix for Williams and AlphaTauri in 2022 and 2023 before being replaced by current Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo.
De Vries has a wealth of endurance racing experience in addition to winning the Formula E drivers’ championship in 2021. Earlier this season, he competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Toyota in the hypercar class.
The Dutchman was selected by his countryman due to his weight and speed, and he has participated in the renowned race for multiple LMP2 teams.
Nyck de Vries is one [driver] I would really like to have on the team. Verstappen said to Opmeer, “He’s very light and fast.”
“For the moment, when you’re very fast and very light around Le Mans, of course, is great.”
The three-time F1 drivers’ champion then targeted Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, one of his contemporary competitors.
The 61-time grand prix winner said, “I keep joking with Fernando [Alonso] that we want to do it together, so that would be quite cool,” before emphasising that with him included, they already have the necessary number to establish his dream team: “So we’ve got three drivers already.”
The Spaniard would give the elite squad more expertise and has already won two 24 Hours of Le Mans races, both with Toyota. However, in response to a query, Verstappen added his father as a driver to the mix.
Like De Vries and Alonso, Jos Verstappen competed in Formula One during the 1990s and early 2000s, so he has a wealth of endurance expertise.
“It’s something I keep telling my dad we have to do,” said Verstappen Jr. “Even though he is unwilling, I would include him as a fourth. Without a doubt, that would be a fantastic week.”
