Brandon Cover featured in a 4-1 triumph over Newport County for Port Vale in Sky Bet League 2 on Saturday, playing 69 minutes at Rodney Parade as the hosts ended the game with nine men.

Moving into the top half of the fourth tier table as a result, the Valiants next take to the field on Saturday, hosting Chesterfield at Vale Park (3pm kick-off), when the 20-year-old could make his third appearance for Vale.

Midfielder Silko Thomas started Wigan Athletic’s 2-1 home defeat to Morecambe in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy last Tuesday, playing the first half at Brick Community Stadium. The 20-year-old has now made a total of five appearances for the Sky Bet League 1 club.

Carlisle United are next up in the competition for the Latics, at Brunton Park, on 8 October (7pm kick-off). League action, meanwhile, returns after the international break, travelling to face Bristol Rovers at Memorial Stadium this Saturday (3pm kick-off). Sitting 20th in the third tier, Shaun Maloney’s side have collected three points from their opening four league fixtures.

Brad Young was an unused substitute for Hartlepool United, meanwhile, in a goalless draw with Halifax Town at Suit Direct Stadium last weekend. The ‘keeper could make a second debut for the National League side when they visit Boston United on Tuesday evening (7:45pm kick-off).
