Brian To’o sets the record straight after shock Panthers exit rumours

Brian To'o of the Panthers.

Regarding reports that he wanted to leave Penrith, Brian To’o has refuted them, saying that all of it was “banter” at State of Origin camp.

The team’s three consecutive NRL premierships have been greatly aided by the standout winger, who was said to be leaving the Panthers unexpectedly early in July.

According to reports, To’o was “shopped around” to other teams, with rumours pointing to the Wests Tigers as a potential suitor for the NSW Blues flyer.

To’o, who has a contract at the foot of the Mountains through at least the end of 2027, was signed by Penrith, who put an end to any possible release for him a few days later.

The 26-year-old revealed in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald that there had been some joking around about To’o joining them after the deaths of two of his closest friends, Stephen Crichton and Jarome Luai.

“It was a bit of banter out of Origin camp,” he remarked.

“We resemble small children, for the most part. We like to joke around whenever we are all together, so it may have came out. I was kind of making a joke out of it with Romey.

“It was all merely small talk and humour. I’m thrilled with my current position in the club and am eager to see what the future holds.

“I recall the amusing banter when I received the call regarding all of these meetings and my departure. I am aware that nothing is true. I am eager to see where my career takes me, and I am still committed to the Panthers through 2027.”

To’o has made 114 first-grade appearances, scoring 78 tries for the Panthers, solidifying his status as one of the best modern-day wingers in the game.

He will start for the defending champions against the Sydney Roosters in their qualifying final on Friday night.
