Josh Carmichael of Collingwood made the difficult decision to withdraw from the AFL due to health reasons.
Since taking a head knock during a Collingwood VFL round six match against the Southport Sharks in May, the 24-year-old has been exhibiting concussion-like symptoms.
Following his evaluation by the independent medical panel, Carmichael decided to retire from contact sports on a medical basis.
“The past couple of months have been a difficult and uncertain time for me but I have comfort now knowing the direction of my future, and disappointingly that is not playing Australian football,” he stated in a statement.

Although playing football has played a significant role in my athletic career and I have enjoyed being a member of the Collingwood Football Club, my future and making sure I have a long and healthy life are my top priorities.
“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped me along the way in football, including the club, my coaches, teammates, and staff, for all of their support during my playing career at Collingwood.
“I will always be appreciative that I was draughted by an AFL team, especially Collingwood, something I never would have imagined happening. Football is all about making lasting friends, and I have made so many along the way.
Regarding the lessons I learnt, the opportunities I had, and the experiences I had while I was here, I will always value them and treasure the memories.
“I sincerely appreciate your love and support during this time, family and friends. Not just now, but the entire trip. never giving up on me. Whatever the case may be.”

Since being selected in the 2022 mid-season draft by Collingwood, Carmichael has participated in eight AFL games.
Following Nathan Murphy’s decision in April, the 24-year-old is the second Collingwood player to withdraw from the game due to illness this season.
Both young Bulldog Aiden O’Driscoll and Melbourne’s Angus Brayshaw retired in 2024 as a result of concussions and their lingering effects.
