Dynamic Essendon forward Jake Stringer is reportedly telling people he has played his last game for the club amid a contract dispute. Stringer’s current deal, which he triggered to extend through 2025, has not satisfied his desire for a longer-term agreement, leading him to explore options with Collingwood and Sydney.
AFL Media’s Cal Twomey reports that Stringer is seeking a two-year contract and suggests Collingwood is a strong contender for his services. “He has triggered a one-year extension worth $400,000 for next season but is looking for more money and a longer term,” Twomey told AFL.com.au’s Gettable.
“Jake Stringer is saying he’s finished with the Bombers and is moving on. Collingwood is interested, with coach Craig McRae keen on him due to his goal-scoring ability, as demonstrated on Anzac Day.”
While there isn’t a flurry of clubs pursuing Stringer, Twomey indicates there will be a suitable team for him. Stringer scored 42 goals in 2024 as a versatile forward and occasional midfielder under Brad Scott.
Collingwood, struggling with key forward issues since Travis Cloke’s departure, could benefit from Stringer’s addition. With Brody Mihocek and Mason Cox battling injuries and Dan McStay recovering from an ACL injury, Stringer’s presence would address a key area of need. Melbourne would also benefit from Stringer’s impact up front, an area they are keen to improve.
