Martin justifies selling “top” young talent that he would have rather kept.

Russell Martin, the manager of the SAINTS, said that he would have loved to keep Jayden Meghoma, but he claimed that Brentford’s offer was too good to refuse.

On the day of the deadline, Meghoma, 18, signed a £5 million contract with the possibility of a £10 million option.

Just two years after joining Saints from Spurs, the England youth international—who was in the penultimate year of his contract—and Sam Amo-Ameyaw made a tidy profit.

Martin stated that while keeping Meghoma was his desire, it got more challenging when he decided not to sign a new contract.

Meghoma was benched for Brentford’s match against Manchester City this past weekend; at the Gtech Community Stadium, it might have been easier for him to break into the starting lineup.

Saints have an abundance of left-backs, including Brazilian Welington, who is expected to sign in January, while Brentford lacks a reliable left-back.

“Our preference would have been Jayden accepting the contract that we offered, which was a really good one for a player of his age,” Martin stated to the Daily Echo.

Jayden has moved to a place where he believes he will have more opportunities sooner. Although I didn’t agree with him, we’ll have to wait and see.

“The club was given a very competitive price. Real business sense dictates that the club should profit handsomely from him at such a young age.

“He is a tremendous talent, a great player, and a really nice young man. I hope he has a truly amazing career.”

“He accepts everyone’s warmest regards. I hope he has fun and accomplishes his goals there.

“However, the fact that we coaches are unable to continue working with him is a little upsetting. As a club, we were at our limits.

“At that point, you try to negotiate the best price you can if the other party is unwilling to sign a new contract. I believe that was a fantastic job that Rasmus, Phil, and the group accomplished.

“I believe it demonstrates to young players that here is a path and a platform to continue and pursue other endeavours. We can all move on, and it’s a wise decision for Jayden as well.”
