Mike Dodds hopes that any changes made to the club’s coaching staff in the future won’t have an effect on his long-term future there.

In a meeting with the Sunderland fan base earlier this month, Kristjaan Speakman reaffirmed that a new head coach will be able to bring in reinforcements ‘if appropriate’. Supporters were concerned that Michael Beale’s lack of a coaching staff upon arrival might discourage some prospective candidates in the future.

The sporting director did state that the team thought it crucial to preserve “continuity and consistency.” Dodds stated that he felt at ease with Beale’s remarks and that nothing much had changed since Beale’s time in office, with the former boss having been anticipated to bolster his coaching staff at some point.

“Yeah, I’m more than comfortable with it, that was the case with Mick [Beale] as well,” Dodds replied.

“We had a discussion with Mick about having a staff member accompany him, but at first, he would enter alone. That was always the way with Mick; it just never happened, for whatever reason. Nothing has changed since Mick entered the room the previous time I took the team. Regarding my status with the football team, not much has changed this time around.”

Dodds currently anticipates being in charge until the end of the current season while Sunderland searches for a new head coach. The acting head coach went on to say that Sunderland’s demanding upcoming schedule and ending a bad run of form were his only priorities.

“As far as I’m concerned, the original conversation was take the team until the end of the season, ‘if we find an ideal candidate between now and then, we’ll let you know’,” Dodds stated.

“I don’t mind the result in the slightest. My top goal is to win football games. With all due respect to that individual, I’m not considering that person to be the next head coach. We require a result, and we require it immediately. The following three games and the one after that will be crucial.”
