It was a tall order to maintain that against Birmingham City on Monday night, but Phil Parkinson saw his team get off to an incredible start.

At St Andrew’s, Jack Marriott gave Wrexham the lead, but it was the closest he could go as Jay Stansfield scored two goals to begin repaying his hefty transfer fee.

Tomoki Iwata scored Birmingham’s final goal from long range to make it 3-1 and secure the win for the home team.

For the opening twenty minutes, Wrexham fought valiantly and looked impressive, but they were unable to hold off the League One title favourites.

Wrexham was always going to find this a difficult request.

Birmingham made significant summer spending investments, and on a difficult night for Wrexham, their skill was evident on the pitch.

Considering all of the excitement around the celebrities involved, many fans will likely feel a little relieved and happy to have this situation resolved.

It was unlike anything seen at League One level before: David Beckham was spotted in the stands, Birmingham’s Tom Brady texted Rob McElhenney, and Sky Sports had an hour-long build-up prior to kickoff.

As the match draws to a close, McElhenney took the opportunity to thank Wrexham supporters for their outstanding turnout on Monday in the St Andrew’s away end.

George Dobson, a midfielder, has chimed in, saying on Wrexham’s official YouTube page that he thought the away Wrexham supporters were “unbelievable” at Birmingham.

Dobson continued, “At the end of the game, Wrexham fans showed the players a lot of love, demonstrating that everyone is united and on the same page moving forward.”

“Nobody is going to be too down, because 13 points from six games is a really good return to start the season,” Dobson said.

“You could tell by the fans—they were clearly amazing tonight. The way they concluded also shows that they are aware that the team and the club as a whole are creating something truly amazing, and that tonight’s outcome won’t alter that.

“We’ve started really well at home and, hopefully, we can continue that on Saturday,” he continued. “We’re looking forward to being back home.”

Wrexham can hit back quickly

Birmingham’s equaliser appeared to shake Wrexham’s confidence because they had grown accustomed to not even giving up goals.

Parkinson expressed disappointment with Wrexham’s response following the equaliser and said that going forward, they should improve on it.

But this Saturday, Wrexham will be back at the STōK Cae Ras, hosting Crawley Town in the most recent League One match.

In April, Wrexham hosted Crawley, and the team won 4-1 to go a step closer to promotion.

With Saturday’s game a fantastic opportunity to get back on track, Dobson and his teammates will relish the chance to play in front of the home crowd once more.
