Jack Ginnivan, a forward for Hawthorn, said he “just got to grow up” after making a lighthearted Instagram joke in front of the Hawks’ semi-final loss to Port Adelaide.
After the Hawks’ three-point loss, Ginnivan famously stoked controversy by writing “see u in 14 days” on former Collingwood teammate and current Sydney ruckman Brodie Grundy’s Instagram post. Power coach Ken Hinkley publicly retaliated against the 21-year-old, starting a verbal spat with James Sicily.
For his part in the stoush, Hinkley was fined $20,000 by the AFL, and according to 7News.com.au, Sicily informed the coach that the Power had been a “nowhere club for eight years.”
While getting ready for the Brownlow Medal, Ginnivan spoke with Seven and thanked the Hawks hierarchy and leaders for supporting him.
“Now that I think about it, it wasn’t the best idea, but the coach and the leaders supported me wholeheartedly,” he remarked.
“I suppose I just need to mature and become a little wiser.”
Ginnivan has caused controversy in each of his past two finals series, famously heading to the Moonee Valley Racecourse on grand final eve while at Collingwood last year, before a trip to a Richmond pub with mates the night before the Hawks’ elimination final win over the Western Bulldogs.
McGovern claims maiden Eagles B&F
Jeremy McGovern, a seasoned West Coast player, has won his first Eagles best and fairest prize.
The 32-year-old, one of two Eagles All-Australians, finished with 184 votes, seven more than midfielder Elliot Yeo (177), who placed third behind All-Australian and leading goalkicker Jake Waterman (155). This was a poor year for the club, as they ended 16th on the ladder.
McGovern, a five-time All-Australian, has been a top intercept defender in the AFL for nearly ten years. In 2017, he came in second in the John Worsfold Medal competition.
