claim a £6 million: Celtic specialist discusses “big” Paulo Bernardo says as the “negotiation” for £6 million starts

If Paulo Bernardo, the standout player for Celtics, signs a permanent deal with Benfica, he might not play every minute.

Frank McAvennie, a former Hoops and West Ham striker, has told Football Insider that the club is “negotiating” to reduce the alleged £6 million release clause for the Portugal under-21 international.

After joining Parkhead on a season-long loan from Benfica last summer, 22-year-old Bernardo has only started 11 games in the league for Brendan Rodgers, recording two goals and two assists.

Although he had some success in December and January, he has not contributed to a goal since the Hoops’ 3-0 victory against St. Mirren on January 2. He has also frequently been benched in favor of players like Matt O’Riley and Tomoki Iwata.

Paulo Bernardo’s new fee is being negotiated by Celtic and Benfica.

Although McAvennie stated he would keep the midfield player for the team for a “fair price,” he was concerned the player would not have much of an impact and that the money would be better used elsewhere.

“They are currently negotiating Bernardo’s price tag,” he said to Football Insider.

“I would be glad if they could get him for a fair price and keep him forever.

But will he be a consistent player? That is the main issue I have.

“Reo Hatate will easily return to the club, and Iwata, who I admire, will play for the balance of the season.

“Brendan and the player themselves will decide whether or not he plays.

“With Callum McGregor and O’Riley, Bernardo’s spots are taken by four players.

“Will supporters prefer Bernardo to enter ahead of those? Not in my opinion.

He lacks Hatate’s ability to recognize a pass.

Hatate looks forward and searches for the striker as his initial action.

“No matter what anyone says, that is what Celtic have been lacking.” “It will be challenging for Bernardo.”
