It appears that Matthew Lodge’s time with the Manly Sea Eagles is almost up. The forward is expected to search for a sixth NRL team.
Uncontracted for the upcoming season, his future has been uncertain for the previous few months, and there is still no word on where he will be when 2025 rolls around.
Lodge, who signed a train-and-trial contract worth about $1000 per week with the Sea Eagles from the Sydney Roosters, was upgraded to the Top 30 roster earlier this season. Lodge had previously sustained multiple ailments, including a ruptured ACL and a bicep injury.
The Courier-Mail reports that Lodge will be leaving the Manly Sea Eagles because the two sides were unable to come to an agreement on a new deal.
The team reportedly offered him a two-year deal earning $150,000 per season, but it’s expected that the front-rower won’t accept the terms and will instead hunt for a new place to call home.
Due to his familial relationship with recruitment officer Peter O’Sullivan, he was previously connected to a move to the Newcastle Knights; however, these rumors were eventually quashed.
In an effort to secure a long-term deal to carry on with his rugby league career, he has also been shopped about to teams in the Super League competition, but no side has yet to shown interest in hiring him.
Described his future as “best-case scenario, someone believes in me and does a couple-of-year deal,” he told AAP recently.
“But it’s certainly difficult here because I’ve had bad luck ever since moving to Manly.
“Where I finish up is uncertain because I am unsigned and the Manly club mentioned attempting to create space. I adore it here. Ultimately, though, people must realize that I have four children and must make ends meet.
“I played on a junior team my entire childhood. However, this is distinct since it provides food for the family and puts a lot of strain on our bodies.”
