Hawthorn and Carlton have exchanged picks, with the Hawks trading their first pick (Pick 14) for the Blues’ future first and second-round picks.
The Hawks will need to reconsider their move for West Coast defender Tom Barrass, while the Blues will pursue Port Adelaide defender Dan Houston again.
Carlton gained Brisbane’s future second-round pick in a pick swap just moments ago, making up for the loss of their 2025 second-round pick to Hawthorn.
This confirmed pick swap has multiple layers, and it has eventually turned the trade period upside-down.
For starters, the Eagles were interested in Hawthorn’s Pick 14 for Barrass, as well as a future first-round pick, which the Hawks had (from Carlton).
Sam Mitchell’s group presently has 33 as their initial selection, with 71 and 77 also available.
All three are unlikely to secure a deal for the West Coast Premiership defender.
The Eagles may miss out on Richmond’s Liam Baker due to a lack of 14-20 selection options.
Carlton, who were insistent on keeping their first-round pick in this year’s draft (Pick 12) for next month’s National Draft, might benefit greatly.
It is thought that in discussions with the Power regarding Houston, a current first-round pick would bring clubs to the table, while a number of subsequent picks may sweeten the offer.
Blues list manager Nick Austin was optimistic that the club could make another first-round pick and has done so, allowing them to make a bid for the two-time All-Australian or go into the draft with a strong hand.
Carlton now has picks 12, 14, 69, 72, and 73 in this year’s draft.
