Millwall will need to be ‘reactive’ in January transfer window

Neil Harris has talked about Millwall needing to be “reactive” in the January transfer window.

The Lions have a number of players – including in-form duo Duncan Watmore and George Honeyman – set to be free agents at the end of June. Loan additions Josh Coburn, Ryan Wintle and Calum Scanlon can be recalled.

Millwall also lost their main number 10 option at the end of the summer trading period with Zian Flemming joining Burnley on loan with an obligation to buy.

Coburn, Tom Bradshaw and Billy Mitchell are all working their way back from injuries.

“We’ll have a clearer picture in maybe a few weeks’ time when the squad is hopefully a little bit healthier,” said Lions head coach Harris, asked about areas he felt the squad could be short when the next window swings around.

“You can plan as much as possible in each position but then need to be reactive to losing players to injury and the random player that might disappear for various reasons.

“I’m always painting a picture in my mind and trying to pass that information on.

“Zian going so late and Aidomo (Emakhu) falling through so late (as a loan exit) affected quite a lot at the attacking end of the pitch.

“We have a couple of really young players finding their feet as well in England, let alone Championship football.

“That all goes into the melting pot – that we’re not blessed with huge options at the top end of the pitch, and some very young players as well.

“There are a lot of senior players out of contract who might have a future here or might not have a future here, that might be thinking about pastures new and longer-term contracts.

“There is a lot to consider at the football club in the next few months.

“My focus purely has to be on the team at the moment. When asked an opinion I give my opinion to what I think we need – but that is continuously changing game by game, especially around the injury scenarios.”
