David Fry had an unforgettable year for the Cleveland Guardians.
He became an All-Star, he played in the postseason, he hit extremely clutch home runs, and he experienced what it’s like to be part of a deep October run.
The utilityman, however, was somewhat limited in recent with an elbow injury that has proven hard to shake off.
He will go on a meeting with Dr. Keith Meister next week to determine if he has surgery.
At this point, it’s the most likely scenario according to reports.
“Couldn’t get to everything yesterday on Guardians, of note: David Fry likely to have surgery on right elbow, meeting with Dr. next week. Could be some changes with coaching staff, unclear if Carl Willis will be back with pitchers. Mutual interest with Austin Hedges,” AP’s Tom Withers posted on X.
Fry having surgery, if it ends up happening, could have a domino effect on the team’s plans.
If he indeed gets Tommy John, he might miss a portion of the beginning of 2025 and once he returns, he might have exclusive designated hitter availability a la Bryce Harper a year ago.
If he is forced to be a DH for most of 2025, the team could just opt to trade Josh Naylor because Fry would have to be the DH and the team probably wants to play Kyle Manzardo at first base most days.
This is pure speculation, though.
For now, it all depends on if Fry gets under the knife or not.
The versatile 28-year-old posted a solid .804 OPS with 14 home runs and the ability to play all over the field, becoming indispensable for manager Stephen Vogt.
