In the summer, Sunderland plans to appoint a new manager. Additionally, as the season draws to a close, there are growing rumors connecting specific managers to the Stadium of Light.
Right now, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and associates are conducting their research.
Previous sources stated that Danny Rohl, the manager of Sheffield Wednesday, and Reims head Will Still are both still under investigation.
At the same time, Sunderland were listed along with an unidentified Belgian coach.
Paul Heckingbottom is Sunderland no.1 target
However, Paul Heckingbottom, the former manager of Sheffield United, has recently been connected to Sunderland.
After leaving Sheffield United earlier this season, Eckingbottom is reportedly Sunderland’s top choice for manager come summertime.
Kristjaan Speakman has previously suggested that, in keeping with the hiring of Alex Neil, Tony Mowbray, and Michael Beale, the team would be more likely to take on an unemployed coach in the summer.
Speakman did not, however, totally rule out luring a manager away from a rival team.
Steve Cooper eyed by Sunderland
Steve Cooper, a 44-year-old boss, is another unemployed manager who has been mentioned in passing in relation to the Sunderland position in recent months.
Cooper and Sunderland are said to value one another, yet there has recently been pressure for Cooper to accept the Welsh national team position.
Furthermore, expert Bailey downplayed the possibility of Cooper joining Sunderland, telling only Sunderland AFC News that the Black Cats couldn’t pay him:
Paul Heckingbottom seems like an excellent fit, in my opinion. He was instrumental in lifting Sheffield United to new heights. They probably can’t afford Cooper at this time. I don’t believe he is suitable for their pay scale.
It appears that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus will only choose one name.
The club is still highly strict even if it is financially successful and Sunderland is expected to gain more money during the summer transfer window.
Although Louis-Dreyfus doesn’t want to overpay at Sunderland, he will undoubtedly overcommit both to the team and himself when he takes over as manager.
Bailey’s remarks won’t be shocking because Cooper has always felt like a long shot.
Additionally, they suggest that Heckingbottom will get the position in the summer, or possibly even before the season ends.
Heckingbottom won’t be cheap either, but he won’t have been paid astronomical salaries at Sheffield United, so he might be far more accessible than Cooper.
And Still would need to be paid his salary in addition to a compensation charge, so Heckingbottom continues to appear like the club’s best option moving forward.
It could turn out to be a really wise addition for Wearside.
