Barbra Streisand is a household name today after showcasing her vocal abilities and star power in, among other projects, A Star is Born and The Way We Were. On top of that, the singer has released nearly 40 albums of breathtaking work that made her into the superstar she is today.
Streisand began her musical career in the 1960s, when she began gracing nightclubs and Broadway theaters with her stunning voice, but it wasn’t until her starring role in Funny Girl that she officially rose to fame.
The singer, songwriter and actress established herself in entertainment following the role, but it didn’t stop there. Streisand went on to win 8 Grammy awards, with a total of 46 nominations, as well as an Academy Award. Check out some of Barbra Streisand’s best songs from over the years!
7. “People” (1964)
This song is instantly connected with Streisand as it stemmed from her most successful role in Funny Girl in 1964. She sang “People” in the 1964 musical, which is what originally put her on the mainstream map. The song hit number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and garnered much success for Streisand.
The singer also won her third Grammy award for “People” in the category of Best Vocal Performance by a Female, the track additionally nominated for Record of the Year.
6. “Memory” (1981)
“Memory,” released on Streisand’s 1981 album Memories and originating in Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Cats, was a hit, rising to number 52 on the Hot 100 and number 9 on the Billboard adult contemporary charts. In Cats, it’s sung by the main character, Grizabella, as a remembrance of her glamorous past and a plea for acceptance.
5. “Guilty” (1980)
Coming off of Streisand’s 1980 album of the same name, “Guilty” was a collaboration of the artist with Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees. The song was a huge success for the duo, scoring number 3 on the Hot 100 chart, as well as a Grammy win for Best Pop Performance by A Duo.
Working on Guilty with Barbra Streisand brought Gibbs a new level of fame after being mostly associated with the disco age, thanks to Saturday Night Fever (1977). This song was the first on the album that the two artists collaborated on, but it wouldn’t be the last.
4. “Tell Him” with Céline Dion (1997)
Streisand partnered up with Céline Dion for the emotional ballad, “Tell Him.” The song became the first single released from Streisand’s 1997 album, Higher Ground and serves as a conversation between two people — a motherly figure giving advice to someone younger — about how to handle a relationship.
3. “The Way We Were” (1973)
Some of Streisand’s biggest hits were written for her films and “The Way We Were” was one of them. This song became her first number one hit, spending three weeks in that slot and 24 on the Hot 100 chart.
2. “Evergreen” (1976)
Streisand is well-known for her role in A Star is Born, which is where her song “Evergreen” was born. The song became the theme of the 1976 film and was one of its most popular tracks.
“Evergreen” hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and it snagged many awards, including one Grammy for Song of the Year and another for Best Pop Vocal Performance
1. “Woman in Love” with Barry Gibb (1980)
Although “Woman in Love” went on to score the number one slot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the song almost didn’t happen. When Barry Gibb was approached to record it with Streisand, he initially wanted to say no. The Bee Gees star was intimidated by working with another powerful singer, but eventually agreed.
“Woman in Love” quickly rose to number one, where it remained for a total of three weeks and remained in the top 100 for 24 weeks.
