The League One side are closing in on a new deal for the 35-year-old striker after 330 appearances for the club over an eight-year period. Jutkiewicz’s contract was set to expire this summer, with question marks being raised over his future due to his age and lack of time remaining on his current deal.
Starting his senior career at Swindon Town the Southampton-born centre-forward has had spells at Everton, Plymouth Argyle, Everton, Huddersfield Town, Motherwell, Coventry City, Middlesbrough, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley and eventually Birmingham, initially on loan in 2016, before joining permanently in just six months later in the winter window.
Can Jutkiewicz still deliver for Birmingham City?
Although the striker’s impact on the pitch may have waned over recent years his, impact behind the scenes cannot be overstated. His leadership and experience could prove vital to a side looking to bounce back after a poor season. With nearly 100 goals in the second tier, he will likely know how to find the back of the net when dropping down a division.
It is likely at 35, he will only be offered a one-year contract, but if he continues to keep himself fit it wouldn’t be unheard of to continue late into his 30s in the EFL. Although on a different level, Jamie Vardy is set to continue past his 38th birthday next year at Leicester City in the Premier League.
Birmingham City are currently being earmarked by several pundits as favourites for League One next season, as they look to bounce straight back to the second tier, hopeful of avoiding a similar fate to Portsmouth, Derby County or Ipswich Town who spent multiple years in the third tier.
