Mowbray initially took a temporary leave of absence in February, which later became formalized in March. Despite winning four out of his eight games since his appointment in January, Mowbray will not be returning to his position at St Andrew’s.

This departure leaves Birmingham in search of their fourth permanent manager within the span of seven months, with a total of six managerial changes during that period, including interim appointments. Gary Rowett returned in March with the task of securing the club’s Championship status, but despite their efforts, Birmingham was relegated on the final day of the season despite defeating Norwich.

Mowbray has chosen to focus on his recovery and spending time with his family. In a statement, he expressed regret over his decision to step away from his role but emphasized the importance of prioritizing his health and personal life at this time.

The 60-year-old affirmed his intention to return to management when he is fully fit but emphasized the need to devote time to his family before committing fully to work again.
