Blue Jays Blanked at Fenway Park, Where Winning Streaks Meet Their End

Toronto Blue Jays v Boston Red Sox

The powerful Blue Jays, who had been dominating offensively in recent weeks, were nowhere to be seen at Fenway Park on Wednesday night, suffering a 3-0 defeat to the Boston Red Sox.

Despite leading the majors with 32 home runs over the past two weeks and boasting a .835 on-base plus slugging percentage, the Blue Jays were stifled by Boston’s Brayan Bello. The right-hander delivered the best start of his career, tossing eight shutout innings with just two hits allowed, one walk, and nine strikeouts. Remarkably, Bello limited the Blue Jays to only four balls hit out of the infield, including a pop-up caught by right-fielder Wilyer Abreu.

Daulton Varsho, who had a career-high 23-game on-base streak, went 0-for-4 and ended the game with a flyout to center. The Jays’ only hits came from an Addison Barger double in the second and a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. single in the seventh.

Chris Bassitt’s strong outing was overshadowed. Despite a rocky first inning where he allowed a run and faced some challenges, Bassitt retired 15 of the next 16 batters but couldn’t get the offensive support needed for his 10th win.

Burnaby, B.C.’s Tyler O’Neill added an insurance home run in the eighth, and Kenley Jansen closed the game with his 25th save of the season and 445th of his career, moving to fourth on the all-time list.
