‘This team needs help’ – Matt Taylor reflects on Wycombe defeat as Bristol Rovers squander lead

Bristol Rovers led for the majority of their home game against Wycombe Wanderers but ran out 2-1 losers

Matt Taylor cuts a dejected figure after Bristol Rovers’ defeat to Wycombe Wanderers

Matt Taylor has stated that his Bristol Rovers team “needs help” following the Gas’s fourth straight League One home loss to Wycombe Wanderers, which came about due to a ninth-hour goal.

After rejoining the team after 17 minutes, Rovers’ Scott Sinclair gave them the lead. Their first-half performance, playing in a modified formation with a back-four back instead of a defense consisting of three center backs and two wing-backs on either flank, was impressive.

But the Gas encouraged pressure in the second half, finally giving up a goal from Daniel Harvie to level the score, and then Joe Low, a former Bristol City defender, soared to the top to score for the second season in a row at the Mem from a corner deep into added time.

At full time, boos echoed through the Mem and some of Thatcher’s End could be heard chanting their disapproval of the manager.

Taylor has undoubtedly been under pressure following four straight losses, particularly given the way the Gas were defeated on Saturday afternoon. However, in response to questions on the complaints from fans, he stated, “I’m different.” Even though I’m on the touchline, I believe it’s obvious that this team is in need of assistance right now. In regard to that, I’m the first person to contact. Yes, they require assistance.

“I can’t deny that I chose a particular squad to handle a particular environment today. There’s a particular kind of profile out there that is perhaps more capable of handling it if it stayed at zero or if we were behind early on in the match.

The term “soft underbelly” might refer to anything physical or something set piece, but it can also refer to something mental, and some of our guys right now aren’t in a particularly good place emotionally.

“After four games lost, things suddenly turn around. However, that’s the nature of who we are right now. Not enough people possess the necessary self-confidence, experience, or knowledge to fall back on.”

Rovers finished August with seven points from their first four games of the season while keeping three clean sheets, making their stellar start to the campaign seem like a distant memory. However, the Gas have fallen into the relegation zone as a result of losses to Barnsley, Wigan, Peterborough, and now Wycombe. Even at this point in the campaign, the table shouldn’t be cause for alarm after eight games, but for those who do look at it, it’s not very aesthetically pleasing.

The circumstances surrounding Saturday’s loss will be the source of the greatest aggravation. Although they were pressuring Wycombe into errors high up the pitch and were getting good value for their advantage, Taylor’s team was unable to turn those mistakes into meaningful opportunities.

Despite the Chairboys’ dominance for most of the second half, Rovers had a great opportunity to double the advantage when Jamie Lindsay met a cutback from Jack Hunt and his shot went beyond the goal. Luke Thomas also had a chance to make it 2-0, but Jamie Lindsay missed it.
