Cumbrian midfielder ready for League Two loan debut in grudge match

Cumbrian Premier League prospect Joe White is set for his latest loan debut this weekend – in a League Two grudge match.

Carlisle-born White is ready to be involved for MK Dons for the first time since joining the club on transfer deadline day.

And the Newcastle United midfielder’s first game in the squad is set to be the televised trip to AFC Wimbledon.

There is little love lost between the clubs since the original Wimbledon’s hugely controversial move to Milton Keynes in 2002 and the subsequent formation of AFC Wimbledon by fans.

The latest meeting between the clubs comes in south London at 12.30pm on Saturday.

It coincides with the start of White’s fourth loan spell away from his top-flight parent club.

After previous loans at Hartlepool United, Exeter City and Crewe Alexandra, the 21-year-old is now out to impress for Mike Williamson’s MK, who are 15th in League Two after five games. Hosts Wimbledon are seventh after their first four league fixtures.

White spent the first half of last season in League Two with Crewe

White’s debut has been held up by injury but the young Cumbrian is now fit and ready to make his mark.

“I’ve trained a few times with the lads, settled in nicely and am looking forward to the weekend,” said White in a club interview.

“[The move is about] development – that’s what you go on loan for, to play games, be in and around first-team football.

“This is my fourth loan already and I just want to become a mainstay in the team and help the team get promoted ultimately.”

White impressed in the first half of last season with Crewe and, in the second half of 2023/24, went on to make his Premier League debut for Newcastle.

After recently signing an extended deal keeping him at St James’ Park until 2027, the skilful midfielder now believes he can offer versatility to Williamson’s MK side.

“He [Williamson] sees me as improving the squad, which is what he’s brought his other additions in to do,” added White.

“I see myself especially in this team as one of the high ones, or as a four as well, I can play anywhere in the [midfield] box. I did that at Crewe last season.

“Wherever I’m needed I can play. Hopefully my versatility can help the team this season.

“I’ve had a bit of an injury which has kept me back, but I’m back fit now, training, trying to get up to match speed – and it’s not a bad one to start with at the weekend.”
