TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal that Ricky Martin, the former technical director of Stoke City, is a candidate to take over as Carlisle United’s new sporting director.
After Paul Simpson was fired earlier this month, League Two Carlisle is trying to reorganise their football department by hiring a new manager and sporting director.
According to TEAMtalk, Martin is among the applicants for Brunton Park’s sporting director position.
After just 15 months on the job at the Bet365 Stadium, Martin resigned from his position as technical director at Stoke in February. Since then, he has been unemployed.
Two months after Alex Neil was chosen as the Potters’ new manager, Martin, a former West Ham United academy head, was given his position at Stoke in November 2022.
However, throughout his tenure at Stoke, the 48-year-old faced harsh criticism from the club’s supporters for making drastic roster changes in the transfer market that had little effect on the team’s results.
Before selecting a new manager, Carlisle United chairman Tom Piatak hopes to reorganise the football department at Brunton Park by hiring a new sporting director.
After a terrible start to the League Two season—they lost their opening four league games—Carlisle and manager Simpson split ways at the end of August.
The Cumbrian club has appointed Jamie Devitt, Steven Rudd, and Mark Birch, its academy coaches, as interim managers while they look for a new permanent manager.
The bookies presently list Gateshead manager Rob Elliot as their favourite to fill the position, but we hear that the new sporting director of Carlisle will have a significant say in who gets hired.
