Agent of Carlton forward provides latest on client’s future following reports

The manager of uncontracted Carlton forward Matthew Owies has clarified that the player’s uncertain future isn’t primarily about financial issues.

AFL fixture news: Round 24 details confirmed

Owies currently lacks a contract for the 2025 season and hasn’t attracted significant interest from clubs this off-season, despite scoring 33 goals—making him Carlton’s third-highest scorer this year.

This situation is noteworthy, considering Owies’s skills as a strong AFL goalsneak. Carlton is focusing on other trade plans, leaving the 27-year-old’s future in limbo.

Blues list manager Nick Austin explained Owies’ contract status after a successful season for the former basketball player. He noted that the team’s forward line will change next year, with Jack Silvagni missing the entire season, Zac Williams shifting to a forward role for the first time, and plans to give Ashton Moir more game time, especially after his promising late-season performance.

Austin also expressed confidence in younger players Jesse Motlop and Corey Durdin, both just 20 and 21, who have faced injuries but need opportunities to take on more responsibility.

According to a report by News Corp, rival clubs have suggested that Owies’ asking price is around $700,000-$800,000 per season, which may be deterring potential suitors. Owies has reportedly met with West Coast, Brisbane, and Gold Coast as he evaluates his options.

His manager, Matt Bain, told AFL.com.au that “money isn’t the driving factor” for Owies as he navigates his uncertain situation with just a week left in the trade period. Bain added that Owies is looking for opportunities and has met with several clubs.

If Owies doesn’t secure a new team during the trade period and Carlton opts not to renew his contract, he could become a delisted free agent in November, allowing him to choose a new club.

As it stands, Owies can still indicate which club he wishes to join, requiring Carlton to facilitate a trade. The Blues have reportedly encouraged Owies to explore new opportunities, a message also communicated to contracted players Matt Kennedy and Lewis Young, as well as to Jack Carroll and Sam Durdin, who also lack deals for next year.
