Tributes have poured in for Andrea Capone, a former footballer who had a trial with Celtic in 2007, after he tragically passed away at 43. Capone was discovered dead at the Palazzo Tirso hotel in Cagliari, Italy, over the weekend.
According to the Italian newspaper *Il Messaggero*, Capone attended a baptism celebration the night before and stayed at the five-star hotel after being unable to find his car keys. He was found dead in a two-story suite, where he appeared to be alone, with head injuries.
Initial reports suggest Capone, born in 1981, may have fallen and suffered fatal injuries. An external examination supports this theory, and investigators are reviewing the scene and footage from the hotel’s cameras to piece together his final moments.
Born in Cagliari, Capone rose through the ranks of the local team and had loan stints at Sora and Treviso before securing a spot in Cagliari’s first team. He made 113 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and wearing the iconic number 10 shirt, previously worn by Gianfranco Zola.
In July 2007, Capone had a trial at Celtic, playing two friendly matches against Peterborough United and Queen’s Park, where he scored once. However, he didn’t secure a move to Scotland and returned to Italy, joining Vicenza before later playing for Grosseto and Salernitana, retiring in 2010.
Cagliari paid tribute to Capone with an official statement expressing profound sadness over his passing. They recalled his talent and dedication, noting his debut at 19 during a 4-0 win against Crotone in Serie B in 2000. The club extended their condolences to Capone’s family, remembering him for his professionalism and passion both on and off the pitch.
