Canada defeated Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 in a pivotal play-off game played in Texas to earn a spot in this year’s Copa America in the United States.
Alistair Johnston of Celtic, who played the entire game as a member of a three-man defense with Joel Waterman and Kamal Miller, was crucial to the win.
The pivotal moment in the game occurred in the 61st minute when Canada capitalized on their dominant play by winning through a perfect finish from Cyle Larin. A late goal by Jacob Shaffelburg clinched the victory and set up jubilation among the Canadian players.
With the win, Canada is guaranteed a spot in the difficult group stage. Their matches against Peru and Chile are scheduled for June 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. These games are essential if Canada hopes to advance to the coveted tournament’s quarterfinals.
Johnston’s summer will be jam-packed with football matches in accordance with Celtic’s US trip, which includes high-profile encounters against DC United, Manchester City, and Chelsea in late July.
With the Euros scheduled for the summer, a handful of Celtic players should be playing for their countries.
