The SFA’s decision to appoint Don Robertson as the referee for the upcoming Livingston vs Celtic match has sparked controversy, given its timing just days after Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is set to learn the outcome of his disciplinary hearing.

After Celtic’s loss to Hearts in February, Rodgers lost his temper and yelled at Robertson and VAR referee John Beaton. As a result, he could be suspended for two games. There were some raised concerns when Robertson’s assignment to the Almondvale game was announced, especially in light of Rogers’ impending hearing, which may keep him out of the dugout for at least two games.

Rogers’ criticism stemmed from the judgments made by Robertson and Beaton during the match against Hearts, which included Yang’s red card and the penalty that was given against Tomoki Iwata following VAR replays.

Des Roache and Steve Conroy, two former Category 1 referees, criticized the SFA’s decision on their podcast. They used Twitter to voice their displeasure.

Although clubs shouldn’t have any say in referee appointments, they contended, the SFA might have shown more discretion in choosing a different official for the match, particularly prior to the conclusion of Rodgers’ disciplinary proceedings.

“The SFA don’t do themselves or their Referees and favors,” they posted. However, clubs shouldn’t have the last say in who officiates their matches. It might have made sense to give the game to someone else before the hearing was over.
