Tomoki Iwata has departed from Celtic, signing a three-year deal with English League One side Birmingham City in a surprising deadline-day transfer.
Iwata, who had been noticeably absent from Celtic’s matchday squads this season, opted for a permanent move rather than a loan, which had been widely anticipated.
The 27-year-old midfielder expressed his gratitude and affection for Celtic and Glasgow through a heartfelt Instagram post.
Iwata also made a special mention of Celtic’s Glasgow Derby on Sunday, wishing his former teammates the best of luck.
He wrote: “Everyone at Celtic, thank you very much for a lot of support until today.
“The experiences I had and being able to play here is a treasure for me.
“I and also my family fell in love with this town.
“I will follow and support you forever.
“Wish you the best for tomorrow’s game!
“Good luck Celtic!”
His move to Birmingham City will offer him the chance to secure regular first-team football, something that was becoming increasingly uncertain at Celtic. This transfer marks a new chapter for Iwata as he takes on the challenges of English football, aiming to excel in the third tier and beyond.
He’s going to absolutely stroll it in that league, and it won’t be surprising is this time next summer we’re talking about his getting a move further up the divisions.
