‘No one can replace you’: Johnny Bench remembers Big Red Machine teammate Pete Rose

Pete Rose, a Cincinnati legend, Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader, and a contentious character in the sport’s history, died on Monday. He was 83.

Rose’s death has sparked reactions from several sports leaders, including Reds owner Bob Castellini, ESPN anchor Mike Greenberg, the Cincinnati Bengals, three-time MVP and World Series champion Alex Rodriguez, among others.

Rose’s Big Red Machine and “Great Eight” teammate Johnny Bench both responded to the news Monday night. In a statement to Enquirer media partner Fox19, Bench expressed sadness. I adored you, Peter Edward. You made each of us better. No matter what life we led. Nobody can replace you.”

Rose’s last public appearance before his death was at the Music City sports collectibles and autograph convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Rose appeared for a photo Sunday at the exhibition in a wheelchair beside old Big Red Machine teammates Dave Concepcion, George Foster, Tony Perez, and Ken Griffey Sr.

On Tuesday, Bench informed sports analyst and radio presenter Dan Patrick that he was going to attend the same event but on a different day, and they did not cross paths.
