The coach expressed admiration for the “Nick Show” after the Magpies’ victory over the Lions.

Craig McRae has declared he will proudly recount to his grandkids that he coached Nick Daicos after the AFL superstar’s stunning second quarter played a pivotal role in Collingwood’s dramatic one-point victory over the Brisbane Lions.

In a thrilling finish at the MCG, Collingwood’s premiership defense remains alive following a classic late-game comeback. Despite trailing for most of the match, the Magpies seized victory with the final three goals, culminating in Beau McCreery’s decisive snap at the 29-minute mark of the last quarter.

Collingwood, who had struggled throughout the game, emerged victorious 11.13 (79) to 11.12 (78) in front of 61,218 spectators. Lachie Schultz also made significant contributions with two crucial late goals.

Brisbane initially dominated, leading by up to 31 points late in the first quarter. However, Nick Daicos’s exceptional second term, where he scored two goals and gathered 13 possessions, reinvigorated the Magpies’ campaign.

Reflecting on the extraordinary performance, McRae said, “Wow, I think I’ll tell my grandkids I coached Nick Daicos.”

The coach praised the “Nick Show” after the Magpies’ win over the Lions, expressing awe at the player’s impact on the game. He described watching the performance as a remarkable experience, highlighting the front-row seat they had to a standout display.

The Magpies still have a chance to finish in the top eight if they beat Melbourne on Friday and other results align in their favor. Despite Brisbane’s strong position, with a 17-point lead late in the final quarter, missed opportunities and a crucial set shot from Joe Daniher left the door open for Collingwood’s comeback.

The loss is a setback for Brisbane, who have now suffered three consecutive defeats to Collingwood, including last year’s grand final. The Lions, already reeling from a recent loss to GWS, will complete their season at home against Essendon. Coach Chris Fagan expressed disappointment, noting missed chances during the game and emphasizing how quickly football margins can shift.
