Ryan Johansen’s tenure with the Colorado Avalanche was brief and ultimately disappointing. Initially, he contributed significantly, particularly on the power play, but his performance soon declined. He struggled to keep pace, failed to generate offense, and offered little value to the team.
By February, it was clear that the experiment with Johansen had failed, prompting calls for action from various quarters, although General Manager Chris MacFarland needed no prompting to address the situation. Less than a month later, Johansen and Colorado’s 2025 first-round pick were traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Sean Walker. This was considered a high price to offload Johansen’s contract, but a necessary one to avoid further complications in the summer.
MacFarland commented on the trade, stating, “It wasn’t working, and we had to fix it.” The Avalanche quickly moved to upgrade their center position by acquiring Casey Mittelstadt. Johansen, meanwhile, became Philadelphia’s problem. The Flyers waived him and sent him to the AHL, hoping to trade him before the NHL Trade Deadline, but those plans were thwarted when Johansen reported an injury.
Philadelphia’s Danny Briere revealed that upon his arrival, Johansen was diagnosed with an injury, necessitating rehab. As a result, the Flyers have been unable to waive or buy out his contract due to his injured status. Briere provided an update, mentioning that Johansen was undergoing non-invasive treatments and would be meeting with their doctors and trainers soon.
The Avalanche’s decision to trade Johansen seems prudent in hindsight. While Johansen may have been dealing with an injury in Colorado, he did not miss any games, which likely prevented the Avalanche from facing any penalties for the trade. Although the trade cost the Avalanche a first-round pick, it was deemed the right move. Now, there’s a possibility that Johansen’s last NHL game might have been played in a Colorado uniform, highlighting how quickly circumstances can change in the NHL.
