Even though the Sky Blues’ penalty-filled loss to Luton Town ultimately brought about a great deal of disappointment, it was a continuation of the fantastic progress the team has made recently.
Naturally, finishing in the top six takes a collective effort, but Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres played crucial roles in Coventry’s success last season.
Maintaining Gyokeres and Hamer over the summer was always going to be difficult, given their performances and the fact that they were approaching the last 12 months of their contracts.
As a result, Coventry would always need to take reasonable bids into consideration. In the end, they sold Gyokeres to Sporting CP for about £20 million, while Hamer signed a £15 million contract to join Sheffield United.
Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres’ Coventry record
Those that witnessed Coventry throughout Gyokeres and Hamer’s two and a half years together will have recognized the talent the two have right away.

---|---|---|---|---|---|
Games played | Wins | Draws | Losses | PPG | Joint Goal Contributions |
101 | 38 | 29 | 34 | 1.42 | 9 |
Even so, it may come as a surprise to learn that in 101 games, they were only directly engaged in nine goal contributions to one another, given their outstanding production.
Gyokeres, of course, scored the most goals, finding the net six times with Hamer’s help. In the meantime, the former Feyenoord player scored three goals thanks to the striker’s assists.
Both players made significant contributions, though. Gyokeres’ assist to Hamer’s goal at Middlesbrough sent the Sky Blues to the play-off final. He then duplicated it in the Wembley final, but it was insufficient to move Coventry to the Premier League.
Coventry City hopes to contend for promotion to the Premier League this season after taking home some substantial FA Cup prize money.
Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres made Coventry a force
The results clearly showed that Hamer and Gyokeres benefited from each other’s presence in the side, even though their direct goal contributions weren’t very strong.
The Sky Blues averaged 1.42 points per game during the course of the 101 games they played concurrently on the field, winning 38 and drawing 29.
They also gave each other room to grow in their own playing philosophies. Gyokeres was the perfect focal point for midfielders because of his physicality and ability to go in behind and create space for players like Hamer.
Gyokeres, as a striker, would have valued a player with Hamer’s technical skill set, and it’s no accident that Hamer’s inclusion in the team coincided with his two finest seasons. The Swedish international is rumored to be joining a Premier League team this summer after his impressive play earned him a transfer to Lisbon.
In total, Gyokeres managed 38 goals and 16 assists in the 101 games with Hamer, and the Blades man struck the net 14 times, and he set up 21 goals, underlining how Robins established a system that allowed them both to excel.
Thankfully for Coventry, despite losing Hamer and Gyokeres, the team has rebounded, and the recruitment team has made some wise signings with the money they brought in.
