Former Huddersfield Town, Hull City, and Sunderland forward Martyn Waghorn is now a free agent following his release by Derby County.
Former Huddersfield Town and Hull City forward Martyn Waghorn will leave Derby County when his contract expires. The 34-year-old rejoined Derby last year, having previously played for the club from 2018 to 2021. After contributing to the team’s promotion from League One, he is now set to move on.
Waghorn’s departure comes alongside five other senior players as Derby restructures their squad in preparation for their return to the Championship. Former Barnsley midfielder Conor Hourihane and Sheffield Wednesday academy graduate Joe Wildsmith are also leaving.
In a statement, Derby announced: “Captain and midfielder Conor Hourihane is to depart after leading the side to promotion back to the Championship.”
“Striker Dwight Gayle, goalkeeper Scott Loach, midfielder Korey Smith, striker Martyn Waghorn, and goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith are also departing, and they leave with the club’s best wishes for the future.
“Forward Tom Barkhuizen and long-time defender Craig Forsyth have triggered performance-based clauses in their contracts to extend their stays with the club by another year.
“Midfielder Liam Thompson has had his contract option exercised for an additional 12 months, while young midfielder Darren Robinson has signed a new two-year contract, extending his stay until 2026. Striker James Collins and Academy graduate Louie Sibley are in discussions with the club regarding their futures.”
Waghorn has had two stints in Yorkshire, the first with Hull City in 2011, when he joined on loan from Leicester City but made just five appearances. He returned to Yorkshire in 2023, when Huddersfield Town borrowed him from Coventry City.
