Details emerge over Derby County’s failed deadline day chase for Championship striker

Derby County were rejected by an unnamed Championship striker because he wanted to fight for his place at his current club, Derbyshire Live has said.

Derby County spent much of the summer transfer window looking to bolster their options at the top of the pitch.

Strikers have come and gone at Pride Park over recent seasons without any long-term option really coming in and making the starting spot their own. That looks as though it may well continue after the recent summer window.

The Rams signed Jerry Yates on loan and Kayden Jackson is an option, but he has started the campaign well out wide.

Another striker was being sought but never came through the door, hence why teenage star Dajaune Brown remained onboard despite wide interest from League One and League Two.

Now, details of the Derby County striker chase have emerged.

According to Derbyshire Live, Rams boss Paul Warne engaged in talks with an unnamed Championship striker’s agent on deadline day amid a potential exit, and there was encouragement a deal could be done. However, the player ultimately decided to stay with his current club and fight for his place.

Warne, while likely frustrated, acknowledged the fair decision and could yet revive the pursuit in January, it is added

In an ideal world

Derby County have been on the lookout for someone who can become their long-term, main man up top for a little while now. It’ll understandably be a frustration for Warne and co but given the demand for strikers this summer, it’s something they’ve managed to navigate well.

Loan man Yates should be a solid option at the top of the pitch having managed respectable returns with Swansea City and Blackpool.

There are plenty of other players capable of chipping in too. The aforementioned Jackson has two in four Championship games while Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, James Collins, Tom Barkhuizen, starlet Brown and more can all offer threats of their own.

Time will tell just who emerges as the leading talisman upon their Championship return though.

A January possibility?

Whoever the unnamed striker is, it seems there’s still a chance of them being back on the Derby County radar when January comes around.

Warne certainly hasn’t burned that bridge with his amicable response to the player’s frustrating decision. And, there’s every chance that this striker isn’t able to get back into the team at his current club.

At that point, one would think the player’s stance changes.

That could then open the door for Brown to head out on loan while the new striker fights with Yates, Collins and Conor Washington for the starting spot.
