Is Conor Washington on the move? Two Derby County players with an uncertain future as August comes to a close.

With the August 30 deadline approaching quickly, a few members of the playing squad remain uncertain about where they will be playing for the 2024/25 season and potentially beyond.

Darren Robinson and Tyrese Fornah have already been loaned out this summer: Robinson joined Hartlepool United on Tuesday, while Fornah is set to play for League Two’s Salford City for the rest of the season.

Currently, Derby cannot afford to sell or loan out many players due to a limited senior squad. However, potential new signings might prompt the club to allow two players at different stages of their careers to leave.

FLW has reviewed the strikers facing an uncertain week, with Paul Warne possibly looking to arrange both permanent and temporary departures from Pride Park before the 11pm deadline.

Conor Washington

At 32 years old, Conor Washington has struggled to make a significant impact at Derby since his move from Rotherham United last summer.

Reuniting with his former manager, Warne, Washington likely hoped for a more successful stint at Derby. However, poor form and a prolonged ankle injury have seemingly cost him his place in the squad this season.

Washington missed most of the pre-season matches and was absent from Derby’s first two league games of the 2024/25 campaign against Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough. He also did not feature in the Carabao Cup match against Chesterfield, which Derby won 2-1.

Historically, Washington has not been a highly prolific striker, a trend that has continued at Pride Park. He managed just three goals in 19 League One appearances last season, all scored before November.

Given the current situation, it seems unlikely Washington will play a significant role in the 2024/25 season. Moving on might be his best option, though Derby may prefer to secure another striker before finalizing any deal for him.

Unlike Washington, 19-year-old Dajaune Brown has a promising future at Derby, having made a strong impression during his time in the academy.

The Nottingham-born striker, who has already been selected for the Jamaican national team, scored nine goals in 11 matches for Derby’s U21s and U18s last season before going on loan to National League club Gateshead.

Despite a slow start in the North East, he ended up scoring six league goals and contributing to the team’s FA Trophy victory. Brown netted a hat-trick against Peterborough Sports in just 22 minutes to advance Gateshead to the semi-finals, and then secured the winning penalty in the shootout against Solihull Moors at Wembley.

The 19-year-old has previously played with the first team, but he made a notable impression in the Carabao Cup match against Chesterfield, even though he didn’t score.

A loan move to a League One or Two club could be very beneficial for Brown at this stage in his career. However, like Washington, this move might only occur once Warne secures another of his desired players before the deadline.
