Paul Warne confirms big Derby County injury blow with 26-year-old out for up to six months

Following his withdrawal against Millwall, Derby County manager Paul Warne has stated that defender Ryan Nyambe might be out for up to six months.

Derby County earned a point away from home against fellow promoted team Oxford United on Tuesday night, managing to play out another 1-1 draw.

Dane Scarlett started the score, but Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s equalizer gave the home team a response. For the midweek match, Paul Warne used the opportunity to make a few changes, but he had to make one forced switch at right-back.

Kane Wilson started and played all 90 minutes for the Rams after coming on in the first half of last weekend’s draw with Millwall. He replaced Ryan Nyambe after only 33 minutes.

Now, it seems the starting berth at right-back will be up for grabs for the foreseeable.

Speaking in the way of last night’s game, Derby County boss Paul Warne confirmed to BBC Radio Derby reporter than Namibian international Nyambe is facing four-to-six months on the sidelines.

It’s a knee injury the 26-year-old has suffered, dealing a big blow to him amid some impressive form.

Dealing with Nyambe’s absence

Former Blackburn Rovers man Nyambe has been the starting right-back for Derby County for much of this season. He had started seven of the last eight Championship games, putting in some strong performances too.

However, having dealt with injury problems before, he now has a fresh issue to contend with.

In the short-term, it gives Wilson a chance to make the starting berth his own. The 24-year-old made a good impression in his first season with the club in League One but this will be a first real chance for him to start regularly in the Championship.

Looking forward to January though, depending on whether Nyambe is likely to be out for four or six months, the club could dip into the transfer market for another option.

The short-term…

In the immediate future, Wilson will take the starting spot. Joe Ward has played all up the right-hand side and can cover at right-back, though he is better in more advanced roles.

Jake Rooney is nearing the end of his lengthy comeback trail and has played at right-back before, so he could come into contention.

Next up is a home clash with Hull City and Warne will likely opt for Wilson at right-back again. Derby County will be keen to claim all three points against the Tigers having won just one of the last six.
