Derby County were knocked out of the League Cup by Barrow on August 27th.
Paul Warne took his side to the Holker Street Stadium for a meeting with League Two side Barrow on Tuesday evening.
The pair faced off in the League Cup back in 2020, with Derby County emerging victorious after a penalty shootout.
This week’s game proved to be less fruitful, however, with the Rams failing to score and this time being on the losing end of a penalty shootout.
Derby must now turn their attention back toward the Championship as a clash against Bristol City awaits at Pride Park on Saturday.
So far this season, Derby have lost two and won one in the league. They were hammered 4-2 by Blackburn Rovers on the opening day.
However, Derby beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in their second outing, picking up their first points since winning promotion to the Championship.
Curtis Nelson issues clear message to Derby County teammates ahead of Bristol City
The Derbyshire outfit were then beaten 2-1 by Watford at Vicarage Road last time out and, of course, lost to Barrow this week.
It has been a concerning start to the season, with Derby’s only win coming after Isaiah Jones gifted them a goal against Boro.
Now, after watching his side fail to beat League Two opposition, Curtis Nelson has sent a clear message to his Derby teammates.
Speaking to DCFC.co.uk post-Barrow, Nelson urged his team to start doing things differently in an attempt to break the opposition down and score goals.
He said: “Moving forward into Saturday against Bristol City, there are things we need to work on and there are things that we can do differently to try and break teams down to get the goals that we need to win games in 90 minutes.”
Derby County have big problem ahead of Bristol City
While goals are the primary concern for Derby right now, the lack of squad depth at the club is also worrying.
Kane Wilson was injured against Middlesbrough and is yet to return to action for the club.
Eiran Cashin is sidelined through concussion protocols, while Ben Osborn is also struggling with a minor issue.
And now, it appears as though those players will miss out against Bristol City this weekend.
Warne provided an update on Cashin and Osborn on Tuesday and it is not looking good ahead of Saturday.
He said: “Still probably too early. I’ll speak to the medical team again, as we do daily, but I haven’t got a definitive answer on that.”
The mini-injury crisis at Pride Park has already highlighted how small Derby’s squad is right now.
Warne only named eight players on his bench, of a possible nine available, for the 2-1 defeat against Watford, with it clear more bodies need to be brought in over the next few days.
