The Detroit Lions appear to be the class of the NFC even without star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, but the likelihood remains that the franchise will try to replace its injured defensive end with a high-level talent.
Less than two weeks remain before the NFL’s November 5 trade deadline, which means the Lions will have to work fast. Typically a team in their position might look for a bargain-bin player at value, but with their Super Bowl window wide open this season, head coach Dan Campbell is liable to take a big swing rather than trying to lay down a proverbial bunt.
Enter three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals, who ESPN’s Benjamin Solak implored Detroit to pursue on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson.
NETWORK “He requested a trade from the Bengals during the offseason, and I think Cincinnati would move him for the right (steep) price,” Solak wrote. “He isn’t exactly the big, long body that Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn typically prefers at edge rusher, but his body of work as a pass rusher is undeniable.
He’s one of the few, if not the only player, who might be available at the deadline who can actually plug the void that Hutchinson’s injury leaves. Hendrickson has [7] sacks (tied for fourth in the NFL) and a 27.5% pass rush win rate this season (third).” Hendrickson produced 17.5 sacks for the Bengals last season, a career high, and has tallied 66.5 sacks across 100 games played over his eight years in the league.
