**Traverse City** – Detroit Red Wings’ 2024 first-round pick Michael Brandsegg-Nygard will not be playing today against the Dallas Stars due to a minor groin tweak.
Brandsegg-Nygard had a strong performance in the first game of the two-game prospect series against Dallas, registering an assist and playing on Detroit’s top line in their 5-1 victory.
“It’s nothing serious,” said Dan Cleary, Detroit’s Director of Player Development. “We don’t want to take any risks with a quick turnaround. He should be ready for training camp on Thursday in Traverse City.”
There has been significant discussion about whether the physically mature Brandsegg-Nygard could make the Detroit roster this season. If not, he is signed to play for Skelleftea in the Swedish Hockey League.
Yzerman’s Call
“Steve (Yzerman) will ultimately make the final call, but Michael will have a say in it too,” Cleary said. “Regardless of the outcome, it will be a valuable experience for him. He was with Skelleftea before joining us, so we’ll see how it goes. He’ll play some preseason games to get a sense of things. For now, we’re just observing.”
Cleary praised Brandsegg-Nygard’s advanced skills for his age. He recently represented Norway at the World Championships, playing alongside NHLer Mats Zuccarello.
“He’s a physically strong player for his age,” Cleary noted. “He’s fit and in good shape. The smaller ice surface should suit him well. He has a powerful shot with quick release and is strong in 50/50 battles. I’m excited to see him play more; he looked solid in yesterday’s game, as did many others.”
In other updates, Carter Gylander started his second consecutive game in goal, making 17 saves in Detroit’s Game 1 win.
