Aston Villa to sell Diego Carlos for £50m to Champions League team

Aston Villa will consider bids for Diego Carlos as they aim to prepare for the Champions League while adhering to profit and sustainability requirements.

But the Academy product Jacob Ramsey has no desire to leave Villa Park this summer and will only depart if the club is unable to secure alternative sales.

Villa, like most Premier League clubs, will need to offset new arrivals with sales during the summer transfer window, despite receiving a £50 million windfall for qualifying for the Champions League.

Villa are not expected to face a large bonus bill for qualifying for the Champions League, with the majority of players understood to be on bonuses for playing in any European tournament that were triggered last season after qualifying for the Europa Conference League.

Villa made a wise decision in this regard, as qualifying for the Champions League might result in significant wage increases.

Central defender Carlos has already sparked interest, and the fact that he has two years left on a deal worth about £100,000-per-week suggests Villa could move him.

The 31-year-old joined Villa for a reputed £26 million two years ago, making his book value to the club £13 million, and Italian reports say AC Milan has already expressed an interest in him.

While selling Carlos would not increase Villa’s PSR significantly, it would free up valuable space on the pay bill and offer them some breathing room.

Ramsey attracting interest from big clubs

Selling Ramsey would provide Villa with a significant PSR rise because any sum collected for him would be counted as 100% profit. However, the 22-year-old has no desire to quit his childhood club and is looking forward to recovering from injury to compete in the Champions League next season.

Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Liverpool are all interested in Ramsey, but Villa’s asking price for the midfielder is likely to be too expensive for all three teams this summer. Ramsey is only anticipated to leave the club if Villa find themselves in a position where they need to raise funds but have failed to sell other players.

Villa are trying to acquire midfielders and have begun conversations with Ross Barkley, who is understood to have a cheap buy-out option in his Luton Town deal, as well as clubs interested in Conor Gallagher. They are also searching for a forward and a full-back to give cover in the middle of the defence. Mario Hermoso, an Atletico Madrid defender, has been linked.

Clement Lenglet and Nicolo Zaniolo, who have spent the season on loan at Villa, are anticipated to return to their parent clubs, Barcelona and Galatasaray.
